Delias georgina

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Wingspan (mm): 57 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Forewings: The forewing underside has a white ground-colour. The plume scale is small (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing is glossed in a coffee colour (Yata and Morishita, 1979). The hindwing underside is yellow and has dark blotches (Kirton, 2018).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). hindwing has a coffee-brown ground colour, with chrome-yellow markings with white edging to most of the spots. The forewing has a extended proximal white area, with black dusting at the base. The submarginal spots are well marked (Pequin, 2021). There are black coloured submarginal bands on both wings upper side (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation

Ten subspecies are described, of which three subspecies are found in Philippines and four are found in Malaya. Males from ssp. schoenigi appear to not have the yellow basal spot and yellow anal margin of the hindwing upper side, these areas are being covered in greyish brown scales. Ssp. tahanica differs from ssp. orphne, in that the latter one has black distal scaling of the hindwing upper side is more enveloping the cell, but not in the same extent as on ssp. simanabum (D'Abrera, 1982). No subspecies (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Similar species

This species is very similar to Delias schoenigi and Delias cinerascens, but this species can be distinguished by the reduced black colouration on the forewing underside. Further, the hindwing underside has a lighter background colouring. Females of Delias cinerascens have similar upper side wing surface markings as females of Delias georgina, but in the latter one it is chrome-yellow with white edging to most of the spots (Pequin, 2021).
