MORPHOLOGY
External characteristics
Male
Forewings: The upper side of the wing surface is sulphur-yellow. The forewing has a black distal marginal border of a variable width, the inner broader part of it is grey-black. Between the black and grey part are six yellow coloured submarginal spot located. The coastal margin and veins are black. The underside of the wing surface has a coffee-brown ground-colour and veins, with pale yellow markings (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The veins are black coloured at the margin and grey-ish white at the inner margin (Pequin, 2021).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface of females is creamy-white. On the forewing are the markings similar as to those of males, but the white proximal area is more complete and the submarginal spots are smaller. The underside of the forewing is similar to that of males, but with larger spots (Pequin, 2021).
Subspecies and variation
Two subspecies are described. Ssp. ariae has a brighter wing colouration than ssp. battana. The upper side wingsurface of females is similar to that of Delias georgina (Pequin, 2021).
