External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 55 (Braby, 2004).
Forewings: The underside wing surface has a broad black submarginal band. The basal half of the underside wing surface is orange-yellow coloured and its outer half is uniformly black, except for the submarginal row of spots (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing underside has an entirely orange basal half, except for the veins (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation

 
Six subspecies are described. There is seasonal and geographical variation; the wet season form usually has a well-developed black band on the wing. The ground-colour is white of subspecies from Australia, Bismark and Fiji (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Similar species

This species is similar to Belenois aurota (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
