External characteristics
Male
Forewings: The forewing has a large conspicuous discocellular spot and has a fairly developed black coloured marginal border (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing has a vestigial black coloured marginal border. The hindwing underside is yellow to creamy-white to brown coloured (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
Female
The hindwing of females has a very variable yellow coloured marking (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
Subspecies and variation
Four subspecies are described. There is geographical variation in the wing markings. Ssp. montana has a yellow coloured underside wing surface (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
