External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 100 (Pequin, 2021).
Forewings: The plume scale is large and has a broad neck (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing underside has an extensive median white coloured area. It further has an inner orange area and the basal area is heavily black dusted (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female  
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The median white area on the forewing is narrower in females (Yata and Morishita, 1979).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Two subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979). Ssp. banggaiensis has much smaller red submarginal spots and a larger orange anal patch (Pequin, 2021).
