MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 64-71. Wingspan (mm): 106-121.
Forewings: Upperside black with whitish or pale yellow subapical band from costa to just before outer margin at vein 5; underside similar. Hindwings crenulate, elongated at end of vein 4, but not enough to call it a tail; upperside black with broad, pale yellowish/grayish irregular band from front margin to just across vein 3, just touching end cell; prominent red spot in space 1a above tornus; underside similar.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 63-72.  Wingspan (mm):108-122.
Forewing, upperside large central whitish field from tornus to costa, not sharply outlined towards apex, intersected by heavy black lines; underside similar. Hindwing shaped as in male; upperside black with conspicuous large red submarginal spots, which are hollow outwardly; underside similar.  

Subspecies and variation

 
The species only occurs on the island of Tenimber and a few islets to the west of it. The populations differ in size, the one from Tenimber (ssp. opinatus) is the smaller one, the other populations have been distinguished as ssp. komos.

Unmistakable.
