MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 54. Wingspan (mm): 93.
Forewings: Upperside dark brown with violet flush, broad slightly oblique pale blue band from outer half of hind margin to upper part of cell; underside dark brown, indistinct whitish submarginal spots growing into three much larger subapical spots. Hindwings Slightly crenulate, no tail at the end of vein 4; upperside dark brown with violet flush, no spots; underside basal quarter whitish/pale grayish, intersected by dark veins, central third brown from inner margin to costa, enclosing large orange spot in middle of space 1b, outer third whitish/pale grayish, intersected by dark veins, parginal white in space 1b enclosing small orange spot.

Female

 58.  Wingspan (mm):100.
Like male but upperside green instead of brown with violet flush and pale blue band of male pale green in female; underside equally greenish where male is dark brown, and whitish on underside hindwing pale green.

No variation recorded.

Similar species

Unmistakable; contrary to the closely related P. laglaizei it does not mimic Alcides.
