Subspecies and variation
Twelve (Yata and Morishita, 1979) to thirteen or fourteen (D'Abrera, 1982) subspecies are described, of which three subspecies are found in Philippines and two subspecies are found in Indo-China; D'Abrera (D'Abrera, 1982) suspects ssp. valeria and ssp. leona are the same subspecies. Males of ssp. hippia are similar to ssp. lutescens. Populations of P. valeria in the west of Java produce larger valeria specimen, than the rest of the island, probably caused by exhibition of seasonal dimorphism (D'Abrera, 1982). There is geographically variance in females; the female ssp. leona from West Java is larger, has a narrower wing and a paler ground-colour than the nominate species. There are two female forms: white and yellow; the yellow form has wder flavo colouration on the hindwing underside (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
