MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 47-61. Wingspan (mm): 84-90.
Forewings: Upperside and underside forewing blackish brown with internervular pale stripes as in other Pachliopta species, dark basal area almost reaching tornus. Hindwings Upperside and underside hindwing blackish brown with white central area consisting of white area in outer half of cell and in bases of spaces 1c to 5, veins crossing the white area outlined in black.; more or less conspicuous red to pink submarginal spots, which may become obsolete towards front margin, or are only visible near tornus.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 50-64.  Wingspan (mm):88-104.
As male, slightly larger and the forewing is more rounded.  

Subspecies and variation

 
There is some variation in size and extent of the wing markings and three subspecies are recognized

Similar species

The black basal area of the forewing reaches further towards the tornus (up to actually touching it) than in other Pachliopta species.
