External characteristics
Male
Forewing length (mm): 52. Wingspan (mm): 85.
Forewings: Upperside and underside forewing black with pale internervular stripes as in other Pachliopta species, dark basal area reaching to about halfway hind margin, spaces 1b and 1c largely whitish, except for basal area. Hindwings Upperside and underside hindwing black without central pale or white area, but with conspicuous submarginal spots which are red near tornus,but become whiter towards the front margin.
Female
As male, the forewing is slightly more rounded.
Subspecies and variation
Although restricted to the island of Luzon, two subspecies have been distinguished check Treadaway
Similar species
Not easily confused with other species, because of the combination of large submarginal spots and absence of a white central area on the hindwing.
