MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Forewing length (mm): 26-36.

General morphology:
Antennae not longer than half of length of forewing, apiculus obtuse, twice as long as width of club, nudum 16 segments. Forewing triangular, costa very slightly to strongly curved throughout, termen almost straight to slightly curved, hind margin about as long as termen. Hindwing termen slightly protruding at tornus, rest of termen evenly curved or a bit protruding in middle of termen, inner margin shorter than or as long as costa; cell a little to much shorter than half wing.

Wing coloration:

Upper side: Upper side forewing dark brown with large white or yellowish hyaline spots including a large spot in cell. Upper side hindwing dark brown, unmarked. 

Underside: Underside forewing as upper side, but broadly white along hind margin and white-dusted in apical area. Underside hindwing dark brown with one or several violet-dusted bands, area between vein 3A and CuA2 plain brown, also when rest of ground color is blackish brown.

Secondary sexual characters:

 
Variable. The forewing of the male may have the veins 1A+2A and CuA2 in the forewing partly swollen, while on the underside of the forewing there is a thick pack of pale-yellow recumbent hairs along the anal vein; also, a large dark distal patch of specialised hair scales may occur on the forewing above, together with a long tuft of straw colored hairs in the basal area of the anal region.

Four species, Sri Lanka and India and through continental SE. Asia to Hainan, the Philippines, Borneo, Java and Sulawesi.
