MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 46-53. Wingspan (mm): 66-79.
Forewings: Upperside black with blue band consisting of median spots from hind margin to apex, separated by dark veins, more or less of even width throughout, no submarginal spots; underside similar, but ground color brown and weak indications of pale submarginal spots, particularly near tornus Hindwings Crenulate, no tail but hindwing longest at end of vein 4; upperside black with conspicuous large whitish spot from costa to cell, followed by a blue bar crossing the cell, followed by a longer blue bar stretching to near tornus, conspicuous submarginal spots present as blue crescents (in space 7 whitish or reddish), no further markings; underside ground color as underside forewing, spotting as upperside, but ground color paler and red markings present in median area; red bar near wing base from costa to cell.

Female  
Similar to male.  

Subspecies and variation

 
Varies in the width of the blue bands on forewing and hindwing,and the expression of red on the underside of the hindwing. Six subspecies are distinguished.

Similar species

Although wing design is reminiscent of G. sarpedon, the narrow blue bands and the much greater intensity of the blue color sets this species easily apart.
