External characteristics
Male
Hindwings The hindwing upper side has a yellow colouration.The hindwing underside lacks the basal spot (Pequin, 2021).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982).
Subspecies and variation
Three subspecies are described. The forewing underside of ssp. walshae has a large white coloured area and the hindwing is creamy or pale yellow coloured. The forewing underside of ssp. ilu has stronger yellow markings. The forewing underside of ssp. sanaeae has a larger area of black markings than the other subspecies (Pequin, 2021).
