External characteristics
Male
Forewing length (mm): 35.5 (Joicey and Noakes, 1915).
Forewings: The upper side of the wing surface is white coloured, with narrow black apical and marginal border ending. The underside wing surface is black coloured. The basal half of the forewing has a white inner margin, with four apical white spots near the margin. Basal two-third of the cell is yellow tinged (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing has a submarginal row of square-shaped grey-white spots near the margin. The inner margin of the underside wing surface is faintly grey-white scaled and has a dark yellow colouration at the base (Pequin, 2021).
Female
Forewing length (mm): 32.5 (Joicey and Noakes, 1915).
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The wings of females are rounded. The upper side wing surface is black coloured, with a greyish white basal area and some yellow scaling. On the forewing there is a row of six white submarginal spots. On the hindwing, there is a similar row of smaller spots. The underside of the wing surface is black, with a yellow median part on the forewing. The submarginal spots on the underside wing surface are larger than on the upper side. Abdomen is yellow (Pequin, 2021).
