External characteristics


Male 

Forewings: The upper side wing surface is white, with a black area on the forewings. The underside wing surface has a brown-ish black ground-colour. The forewing has a white proximal area and four small yellow subapical spots (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing upper side has a narrow black marginal border, which is formed from spots. The hindwing has a band marked with yellow bars. There is large cell-spot and submarginal spots. There is strong yellow dusting below the cell on the inner margin (Pequin, 2021).

Female  
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface of females is creamy-white. The forewing has three or four yellowish subapical spots (Pequin, 2021).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Two subspecies are described. Females from rectimargo from ssp. approximata have a sharply defined black margin on the hindwing and on the hindwing underside the submarginal spot below vein Cu2 is vestigial (Pequin, 2021).
