MORPHOLOGY
External characteristics
Male
Forewing length (mm): 36-44. Wingspan (mm): 54-63.
Forewings: Upperside black, pale bluish/greenish spots as follows: complete series of small but conspicuous submarginal spots, series of median spots from hind margin to near apex, lower spots largest and more or less confluent, filling about 1/3 of width of wing along vein 1, narrow linear spots in cell and at end cell, basal-most one continuing to hind margin; underside similar, but rather dark brown Hindwings Crenulate, no tail; upperside black with well developed submarginal spots, large central pale greenish band from costa to just before tornus, widest at costa, at least half of length costa, enclosing dark triangular spot from costa to cell; underside dark brown, as upperside but with some irregular red median spots, dark triangular spot in pale band from costa to cell carries a red spot along vein 8.
Female
Similar to male, but dark brown rather than black.
Subspecies and variation
There is some variation in size and particularly in the extension of wing markings and intensity of the color of the pale areas; 13 subspecies are recognized, seven of which are found in the Malaysian area.
Similar species
Similar to G. evemon, with which its distribution area largely overlaps. In the latter, the small whitish triangular spot at the costa near the wing base on the hindwing is separate from the broad white band instead of part of it, and there is no red spot on vein 8.
