Delias gabia

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Wingspan (mm): 52 - 58 (DBpedia, n.d.).
Hindwings The hindwing underside has an orange patch from the submedian to vein Cu1. There is an marginal band, which can be unmarked or spotted (Joicey and Talbot, 1922).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The hindwing has a broader margin. The hindwing orange median patch is as in the males, but reaches vein M3 (Joicey and Talbot, 1922).

Subspecies and variation

Nine subspecies are described, of which five subspecies are found in Papua (Pequin, 2021).

Similar species

This species is very similar to Delias momea. The scent-scale of Delias fruhstorferi differs from other species in the groups nysa. The six submarginal spots are in Delias fruhstorferi bigger than in Delias nysa and Delias momea. Delias fruhstorferi has a white post cellular bar of three spots, which is absent in Delias momea and Delias nysa (Pequin, 2021).
