External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 60 - 63 (DBpedia, n.d.).
The shape of the uncus and the scent-scale gives this species a specific status (Pequin, 2021).Forewings: The plume scale is broad and has a short neck (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing underside has a broad black submarginal band, with the inner margin almost even. It has a series of yellow spots, including a roughly round red coloured spot in each of them (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female  Wingspan (mm):76 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface of females has an uniformly and heavily black dusted band and the veins are blackened (Yata and Morishita, 1979).  

Subspecies and variation

 
No subspecies (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Similar species

This species can be distinguished by having a more extended yellow area and the black distal border is unbroken (Pequin, 2021).
