Delias castaneus

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male

Forewings: The upper side wing surface has a white colouration. The forewing upper side has a black distal half to the end of the cell and the costa is black at the base. The forewing underside is black with a white inner margin. There is a subapical band of three sulphur-yellow spots, and there is sometimes a fourth spot. There is usually a white spot on the discocellulars (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing upper side has a narrow black margin. The hindwing underside has a black ground-colour. There is a chocolate-brown colouration near the distal margin and including the distal half of the costa, bordered with sulphur-yellow, the veins in this area are grey-white. There is a black distal patch and a large red basa costal patch in a somewhat rectangular shape. The costal edging has a yellow-ish white colour (Pequin, 2021).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface of females has a slight yellow tinge. The forewing has an extended black area border, leaving a white discocellular dot. There are two or three yellowish subapical spots or streaks which may sometimes be obsolete. The black margins on the hindwing are broader in females (Pequin, 2021).
