Delias baracasa

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Forewing length (mm): 30 (Kirton, 2018). Wingspan (mm): 50 (DBpedia, n.d.).
Forewings: The upper side wing surface is white (Kirton, 2018).  Hindwings The hindwing underside has characteristic black vein markings (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979) in the yellow area (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The female is very similar to the male, but the black border is better developed on the upper side wing surface (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation

Six subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021). The hindwing underside of ssp. cathara is yellow coloured with a series of white spots in the black border. Ssp. benguetana differs from the nominate species by the broader black border on the upper side wing surface and hindwing underside, and the series of white spots is more clearly defined (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
