MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 

Forewings: The underside wing surface is almost totally white (D'Abrera, 1982; Yata and Morishita, 1979), with a marginal and discal row of white coloured spots. The underside wing surface has the veins being bordered by black. The forewing underside has a marginal portion dull-yellow coloured. The forewing upper side apex has a reduced marginal border (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing underside has an orange-yellow colouration, with a black border with reddish orange markings or spots (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female  
The females have black margins on both wings and a pink-ish ground colour (D'Abrera, 1982).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Four subspecies are described. Females of ssp. lenitas have a yellowish ground colour suffusion on the underside wing surface (D'Abrera, 1982). The males of ssp. tamar have the wings entirely blackened, except for the basal half of the hindwing. Ssp. hyele is the palest subspecies, with the black streaks along the veins being absent in males and the reddish orange spots being reduced (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
