External characteristics


Male 

Forewings: The forewing is is weakly acute (Yata and Morishita, 1979). 

Female  
The basal half of the hindwing upper side of the female is widely darkened. The black marginal borders on both wings are broader in females than in males (Yata and Morishita, 1979).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Six subspecies are described. Ssp. caepia is smaller than the nominate species. The wings are wider in ssp. gerasa and the white stripes on the black margina are vestigial. Ssp. aegina has slender stripes on the apical black (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
