MORPHOLOGY
External characteristics
Male
Forewings: The upper side wing surface is white. The forewing has a black marginal border, which is broad on the costa and narrows posteriorly to the submedian fold. Generally, there are two submarginal spots, but there can be more sometimes. The underside of the forewing is white and has a black-ish brown marginal border. Both the costa and the discocellular bare are black-ish brown coloured and are separated from the apical area by a broad white postcellular bar. The submarginal spots, of which two are yellow coloured, are on the underside wing surface larger than on the upper side (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing has a narrow grey-black coloured marginal border from the anal angle to vein M3, sometimes the colouration is slightly broken up by the white ground-colour. The underside of the hindwing is lemon-yellow and has a black-ish brown coloured marginal border. There are five submarginal yellow spots (Pequin, 2021).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface of females is creamy-white. The basal suffusion on the forewing is brownish coloured and has a broad black-brown outer marginal border. The underside of the forewing is as in males. The marginal border of the hindwing is broader in females and has smaller submarginal spots than males (Pequin, 2021).
Subspecies and variation
Seven subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021).
