Odontoptilum angulata

MORPHOLOGY

The descriptions below are on the genus level. For difference between the species we recommend to look at the pictures or look up the original species description.

External characteristics

Forewing length (mm): 18-22.

General morphology:
Antennae not or just half of length of forewing, apiculus stout, not tapered to a sharp apex. Forewing relatively narrow, hind margin longer than termen, apex almost square, termen more or less bulging out in upper half and weakly indented between veins CuA2 and 1A+2A. Hindwing with inner margin and costa subequal or the former slightly longer; termen wavy because of shallow or deeper indentations at apex and further down; tornal cilia elongate.

Wing coloration:

Upper side: Upper side forewing brown (may have a purple hue) with darker areas (may be black), in one species with curved white line from costa to hind margin; tiny hyaline apical spots, sometimes a hyaline spot in space cua1, never in cell. Upper side hindwing generally darker area at apex, rest of wing variously colored with brownish shades, with or without a purple hue, in some species mainly white.

Underside: Underside forewing about as upper side, a bit paler and plainer. Underside hindwing the white area more extensive and prominent than on the upper side, blackish at apex and in two spots in space sc+r1, particularly the innermost spot.

Secondary sexual characters:

Male fore coxae with hair pencil lying against centre of thorax; scapulae more or less prolonged and in one species forming a hair pencil that fits into a groove between the anal veins near the base on the upper side of the hindwing. Female with dense anal tuft.
