MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 70-95. Wingspan (mm): 97-117.
Forewings: Upperside black with weaker or stronger whitish streaks on both sides of veins; underside similar. Hindwings Upperside black with central yellow band, intersected by black veins, covering bases of spaces 3 to 7 and up to half of cell; underside similar.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 75-85.  Wingspan (mm):116-136.
Forewing, upperside dark brown, white along veins much better developed than in male; underside similar. Hindwing, upperside black with central yellow area in spaces 2 to 6 or rarely 7, large black elliptical submarginal spots in spaces 2-6, which may fuse with the black outer margin; underside similar.  

Subspecies and variation

 
The species has a wide distribution area from Sumbawa to Tenimber and S Sulawesi, covering many islands, and it is not remarkable that there are various island forms. Eleven subspecies have been described, some of which occur on a single tiny island only.
