MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Forewing length (mm): 14-25.

General morphology:
Antennae about as long as half of length of forewing, club slender, apiculus obtuse, finely pointed, 11 to 14 segments. Forewing broad, termen nicely curved, hind margin longer than termen; veins R1 and R2 almost touching, vein M3 much nearer to vein CuA1 than to vein M1. Hindwing termen evenly rounded, inner margin about as long as costa.

Wing coloration:

Upper side: Unmarked blackish brown above and below (below a bit paler), or, usually, forewing with a wide orange area that covers one third to more than half of the wing. Much seasonal and geographic variation.

Secondary sexual characters – Male with long thin hair pencil from base of costa on upper side of hindwing, engaged with a groove, containing specialized scales below the radius vein on the underside of the forewing.
