MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 59-62. Wingspan (mm): 100-104.
Forewings: Upperside forewing, mainly whitish with black veins, black margin and internervular black stripes connected to black along margin; underside forewing similar.  Hindwings Upperside hindwing black with large central white area covering basal parts of spaces 1b to 7 and most of the cell, obscure red submarginal spots; underside hindwing similar, but submarginal spots orange to brilliant red.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 59-63.  Wingspan (mm):100-104.
Similar to male, but may be paler, more brownish in general color.  

Subspecies and variation

 

Similar species

As in P. liris the white area of the hindwing reaches the front margin, but its inner border is not straight as in the latter.
