Eurema lacteola

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Forewing length (mm): 19 - 22 (Otsuka, Kazuhisa, 2001) .
Forewings: The forewing upper side has a black margin, this black border is concave and angles towards the base (D'Abrera, 1982). The wing colouration is a pale greenish lemon yellow colour, with a pale bluish white gloss. The underside termen have a black spot in each end of the veins. The forewing underside has a single, usually small, cell spot (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing upper side has a broad black coloured border, with the inner margin slightly projected along each vein (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female
The female is milky white coloured on the upper side wing surface. The square, dark subapical spot on the forewing underside lacks (Yata and Morishita, 1979)

Subspecies and variation

Two subspecies are described. There is geographical variation in ssp. montivaga. Ssp. leacteola differs from ssp. montivaga, in that the latter subspecies has a narrower black border on the hindwing upper side, with a more clearly defined inner margin, the spots on the underside wing surface are better developed and more prominent, and the male ssp. montivaga has ultra-violet reflection pattern (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Similar species

The male of this species is similar to Eurema hiurae, Eurema pallida, Eurema lombokiana and Eurema mentawiensis, but can be distinguished by its ground colour, the black borders on the hindwing upper side and the termen. Females of this species resemble Eurema hiurae and Eurema mentawiensis, but can be distinguished by the colour of the wing surface and the termen (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
