External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 64 - 71 (DBpedia, n.d.).
Forewings: The forewing underside is uniformly black, except for the basal area and the outer series of white coloured spots. The upper side wing surface are broadly bordered with black, with a series of white subapical spots on the forewing (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing its basal half is yellow coloured, while the outer half is black with a series of prominent red spots (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female  
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The basal area of the forewing underside is yellow coloured (Yata and Morishita, 1979).  

Subspecies and variation
