External characteristics
Male
Wingspan (mm): 68 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Forewings: The upper side of the wings is white, with black veins on the forewing. The forewing has further a blackish apical area reaching the cell (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings There are black veins on the hindwing distally. The hindwing has a narrow blackish marginal border from the anal angle to postdiscal area and there are small blackish marginal marks on veins Cu1 - M2. The hindwing is bright yellow coloured, with black veins and costal edge. On the submarginal area, there is a series of six spots: four are greyish white and the anterior two are yellow (Pequin, 2021).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings. In addition, the females have a wider black border on the wings (D'Abrera, 1982). Females are similar to the males, but have a more rounded apical area of the forewing. Further, the upper side wing surface has a stronger black colouration (Pequin, 2021).
Subspecies and variation
Six subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021). Ssp. indistincta have darker and more heavily marked vein stripes on the upper side wing surface than the nominate subspecies. The forewing apical area of both wing surfaces is suffused with grey by ssp. indistincta. Further, the two yellow apical spots on the hindwing upper side are very prominent on ssp. indistincta (D'Abrera, 1982).
