Delias momea

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male

Forewings: The distal area on the forewing has a black colouration and usually reaches the end of the cell and narrows to the submedian. There is a subapical row of five small white spots. The costa is slightly dusted with black and has three small white post-cellular spots. The underside of the forewing is half lemon-yellow, half white coloured. The distal half is fuscous-brown coloured, with two yellow spots near the margin. Further, there are six yellow submarginal spots and a complete row of postdiscal white spots (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing has a black-ish brown ground colour (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side of the forewing is yellowish. The black marginal border on the hindwing is broader in females than for males (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979) and there is mostly a series of white dots. The rest of the hindwing is darker than in the male (Pequin, 2021). The forewing apex is more rounded (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation

Five subspecies are described, of which three subspecies are found in Java and two subspecies are found in Sumatra. Females of ssp. huphinoides are similar to females of ssp. momea, but the latter one has larger submarginal spots on the upper side of the wing (Pequin, 2021).

Similar species

This species is on the upper side wing surface very similar to the males of Huphina nadina fawcetti Butler (Pequin, 2021).
