External characteristics
Male
Wingspan (mm): 51 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Forewings: The upper side wing surface is white coloured. The forewing has on both sides an oblique subapical straight band of yellow coloured spots, divided by the black veins (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892). Hindwings The hindwing upper side outer margin is narrowly black. The hindwing underside is black coloured and has a large suboval white pathc. There is a broad crismson coloured bar, which is divided into three by the black veins. There is towards the base an oval crimson spot and some crimson coloured bands (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982).
Subspecies and variation
Six subspecies are described, of which five subspecies are found in Papua (Pequin, 2021).
