MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Wingspan (mm): 44.5 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Forewings: The upper side wing surface is creamy-white with a broad black distal area on the forewing. There are two or three yellow subapical spots on the smoky-black coloured forewing underside. There is often a white post-cellular mark of variable size beyond the upper end of the cell (Pequin, 2021). Hindwings The hindwing has a black edging, in the form of a line. There is a small yellow basal costal spot on the hindwing underside, and a silvery-white patch occupies the greater part of the costa (Pequin, 2021).

Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface is black with yellow markings. There is a greenish yellow proximal area on the forewing and a subapical row of four chrome-yellow patches. The hindwing is three-fourth white, has a proximal greenish yellow area and there are usually two yellow submarginal dots. The underside of the wings is black, where the forewing has yellow subapical patches. The hindwing of females has the same yellow basal spot and submarginal white line on the hindwing as males (Pequin, 2021).
