External characteristics
Male
Wingspan (mm): 40 - 43 (DBpedia, n.d.).
Forewings: The forewing has a very narrow black coloured distal border. The edge of this border is straight and oblique to the margin. The forewing underside has a distinctly rounded black coloured distal edge. There are yellow subapical spots, which form a band from the costa to vein M3 (Joicey and Talbot, 1922). Hindwings The hindwing has a reduced inner marginal black border. There is a red submarginal line (Joicey and Talbot, 1922).
Female
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The forewing upper and the hindwing side have a narrower black area in females. The hindwing has increased black scaling at the apex. The female can have a yellowish tint. The discal area of the forewing underside is more or less laved with straw-yellow (Joicey and Talbot, 1922).
Subspecies and variation
Two subspecies are described. Ssp. latiapicalis var. paniaia has the greatest extent of the white area outside the red submarginal line (Pequin, 2021).
