External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 55 - 60 (DBpedia, n.d.).
Forewings: There is a enlarged area of pale markings on the underside wing surface. The black basal area of the cell on the underside wing surface is almost extinct. The black areas are heavily powdered with yellow (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings Has a considerable amount of yellow on the underside of the hindwing and the veins are strongly marked out in black (Pequin, 2021). The hindwing underside has a yellow ground-colour and the continuous median black band is not broken (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Female  
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Three subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021).
