MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Wingspan (mm): 93 (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).
Forewings: Both wings are pure white on the upper side surface. The forewing is grey-ish black on the apical third, the costa and the base. The apical area is black coloured and indented inwardly, with three small grey-ish white spots. The forewing underside is grey-ish black coloured, except for the white coloured inner margin. There is a large oblong oblique grey-ish white spot beyond the cell. There is a row of five conical spots near the apex, of which four are yellow and one is white coloured (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892). Hindwings The hindwing upper side has red coloured submarginal spots (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979), which are triangular (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892). The hindwing underside has blackened veins (Yata and Morishita, 1979). The hindwing upper side has the outer margins and the ends of the veins narrowly black. The hindwing underside is bright yellow, with a broad black coloured marginal band. There is a red patch below te costal nervure (Grose Smith And Kirby, 1892).

Female  
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982).  

Subspecies and variation

 
Two subspecies are described (Pequin, 2021). No subspecies (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
