External characteristics
Male
Forewings: The forewing upper side and underside have red coloured subapical spots (Van Mastrigt, 2012). Hindwings The hindwing underside has red coloured terminal spots and black spots, which vary greatly in size per specimen (Van Mastrigt, 2012).
Female
The forewing underside is white coloured (Van Mastrigt, 2012).
Subspecies and variation
The subapical and terminal spots on the forewing and hindwing, respectively, can be yellow coloured, instead of red. There is also an intermediate orange form. (Van Mastrigt, 2012).
