MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 42-49. Wingspan (mm): 66-75.
Forewings: Upperside creamish with dark brown pattern as follows: veins broadly darkened, dark oblique crossbands in cell, outer margin broadly darkened, enveloping a complete series of submarginal spots; underside similar, brown a shade lighter Hindwings Margin slightly crenulate, no tail; upperside as on forewing; underside brown a shade lighter.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 47-53.  Wingspan (mm):72-82.
Similar to male.  

Subspecies and variation

 
Much individual variation in the extent of the dark color, in extreme cases covering most of the wings. Ten subspecies are recognized, six of which occur in the Malaysian area.

Similar species

Strongly reminiscent of species of the genus Parantica (Nymphalidae: Danainae). All Danainae are poisonous. Papilionidae are characterized by the possession of a single anal vein in the hindwing, instead of two.
