Pachliopta strandi (Bryk, 1930)

OCCURENCE

Habitat: Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Dry,Grassland - Subtropical/Tropical Dry
This species is an inhabitant of lowland foothills of 0-700 m asl (Danielsen and Treadaway 2004), although it can be found at medium altitudes up to about 1,200 m in the Sierra Madre, eastern Luzon, and on the slopes of Cordillera Central in the west (Tsukada and Nishiyama 1982). It is a species with a variable habitat (Collins and Morris 1985). For example, at Asin Hotspring near Baguio, it flies in open wooded grassland, together with Pachliopta kotzebuea , and in the eastern and western foothills of the Sierra Madre and in the limestone hills of Luzon's northern tip, it flies in heavily wooded secondary forests ( P. kotzebuea remains in the grassland) (Collins and Morris 1985). Page and Treadaway (2003) describe the habitat of this species as lowland forest and clearings within forest, and it has been described in Central Luzon flying straight and fast through clearings in damaged secondary forest (Page and Treadaway 2004). P . schadenberg i flies at heights of 1-4 m, particularly during the morning and late afternoon and the main flight season in the Sierra Madre is February to August, with a peak in April (Collins and Morris 1985). Other records, mainly from the Cordillera Central, indicate adults flying later in the year, from May to November (Tsukada and Nishiyama 1982). The exact foodplant of this species is unknown, however it is likely to be in the Aristolochiacae family (Page and Treadaway 2003).

Population: The population of this species is thought to be quite small as it only occurs in a very limited range on and around Luzon island, and is considered to be locally distributed (Collins and Morris 1985). This species is thought to be much less common than Atrophaneura rhodifer (Page and Treadaway 2004), and indeed both subspecies were considered rare in this same study. Exact population data is not available, however the population of both subspecies was considered stable in 2004 (Danielsen and Treadaway 2004).
Range: This species is distributed around Luzon and its neighbouring islands (Collins and Morris 1985). The subspecies A. s. schadenbergi occurs in Northwest, Central and East Luzon (Treadaway 1995, Danielsen and Treadaway 2004), where it is found in the Cordillera Centre and Sierra Madre of northern Luzon, reaching as far south as the Bataan Peninsula and the Wawa Dam, north-east of Manila (Collins and Morris 1985). The subspecies A. s. micholitzi is found in north-east Luzon and on Babuyan and Camiguin de Luzon Island, one of the Babuyanes (Page and Treadaway 2003, Treadaway 1995, Danielsen and Treadaway 2004). It is also found on Babuyan island itself (Danielsen and Treadaway 2004, J. Moonen pers. comm. 2019). Generally a lowland species (Danielsen and Treadaway 2004), it can be also found at medium altitudes of up to 1,200 m asl (Tsukada and Nishiyama 1982). Its estimated extent of occurrence is approximately 212,000 km².
