Pareronia valeria

MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Forewing length (mm): 37 - 39 (Otsuka, Kazuhisa, 2001), 40 (Kirton, 2018) . Wingspan (mm): 80 (Feltwell, 1993).
Forewings: The upper side wing surface is a pale greenish blue, with a black coloured border and blackened veins. The underside wing surface is white coloured and barely marked (Kirton, 2018).

Female  Wingspan (mm):80 (Feltwell, 1993).
The upper side wing surface has a black coloured obscure strip in the cell. The hindwing upper side has an entirely yellow cell (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation

Twelve (Yata and Morishita, 1979) to thirteen or fourteen (D'Abrera, 1982) subspecies are described, of which three subspecies are found in Philippines and two subspecies are found in Indo-China; D'Abrera (D'Abrera, 1982) suspects ssp. valeria and ssp. leona are the same subspecies. Males of ssp. hippia are similar to ssp. lutescens. Populations of P. valeria in the west of Java produce larger valeria specimen, than the rest of the island, probably caused by exhibition of seasonal dimorphism (D'Abrera, 1982). There is geographically variance in females; the female ssp. leona from West Java is larger, has a narrower wing and a paler ground-colour than the nominate species. There are two female forms: white and yellow; the yellow form has wder flavo colouration on the hindwing underside (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Similar species

This species is similar to Pareronia anais and P. nishiyamai, but can be distinguished by the absence of the subapical row of spots on the forewing upper side (Yata and Morishita, 1979). The female is similar to some of the Parantica species, but the areas between the veins on the wings are white coloured, instead of blue as in the latter species (Otsuka, Kazuhisa, 2001).
