Subspecies and variation

Five (D'Abrera, 1982) to seven (Yata and Morishita, 1979) subspecies are described. The specimen of ssp. bargylia are divergent from the other (sub)species, because they have a different pattern. Further, ssp bargylia have a different shape, especially the forewing is more rounded. Female of ssp. bargylia do not have the brown-violet tinge on the upper side of both wings, and the submarginal spots are almost twice as broad, being particularly outstanding on the underside of the hindwing, shaped as star-shaped patches (D'Abrera, 1982). There is seasonal variation; the dry season form is smaller and the ground-colour of females is less stained and the black markings are reduced. The shape of the wing of ssp. bargylia is much more rounded and the female upper side wing surface is not tinged with purple-brown colouration, the submarginal spot is slender and is cross-shaped on the hindwing underside. The submarginal row of spots and discal spots around the cell appear to be reduced in ssp. hermonicia (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
