MORPHOLOGY


External characteristics


Male 
Forewing length (mm): 50. Wingspan (mm): 85.
Forewings: Upperside and underside forewing black with violet-grayish internervular stripes, black basal area reaching to about halfway hind margin Hindwings Upperside and underside of hindwing black with white central area covering greater part of cell and adjacent basal areas of spaces 1c-6 (??), pink submarginal spots hardly visible to conspicuous.

Female 
Forewing length (mm):
 50-56.  Wingspan (mm):80-88.
Similar to male, forewing more rounded, submarginal spots on hindwing generally more strongly developed.  

Subspecies and variation

 
Too few specimens are known to give an impression of the variation.

Similar species

The only other Pachliopta species with the white area on the hindwing covering more than half of the cell is P. strandi. The two species (both Philippine endemics) are also considered subspecies of a single species, P. phlegon.
