External characteristics
Male
Forewings: The upper side wing surface has a black coloured border. The forewing upper side has a slight extension of the black border along the hind margin toward the base. The termen on the underside wing surface are prominently bordered with black. The forewing underside has a tornal oblique band vestigial (Yata and Morishita, 1979). Hindwings The hindwing underside has a unarranged series of submarginal spots (Yata and Morishita, 1979).

Subspecies and variation
Five subspecies are described (D'Abrera, 1982; Yata and Morishita, 1979). This species has geographical variation and has some minor seasonal variation. This variation can mainly be seen in the width of the black borders on the upper side wing surface. The black border on the upper side wing surface are narrower in ssp. bazilana and has less distinct spots on the underside wing surface than in the nominate species. The black borders of ssp. mindorana are very broad on the underside wing surface, the inner margins are irregularly cut and ill-defined. The male of ssp. luzonensis has a paler ground-colour than the nominate species (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
