Subspecies and variation

Four (Yata and Morishita, 1979) or five (D'Abrera, 1982) subspecies are described. Ssp. sodalis is similar to ssp. sari, but the latter one has more pronounced maculations of the upper side wing surface. Sexes of ssp. sodalis are similar, but the females are paler on both wingsurfaces (D'Abrera, 1982). There is often no to little seasonal and geographical variation. Ssp. sodalis has on the underside wing surface rather vestigial and indistinct spots. The black border on the hindwing upper side of ssp. sari is deeply excavated in each space and the spots beneath it are well developed and distinct (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
