MORPHOLOGY

External characteristics

Male
Wingspan (mm): 64 (Kirby and Bowdler Sharpe, 1897) .
The body is whitish or yellowish coloured and the antennae are black coloured (Kirby & Bowdler Sharpe, 1897). Forewings: The forewing has a black coloured border, which is widened. Connected to this borders is the cell end spot, and submarginal spots become vestigial or extinct. The ground-colour of the upper side wing surface is not uniformly dark orange (Yata and Morishita, 1979). The forewing underside is black coloured, with a white-ish streak at the end of the cell and a row of four or five white or yellow spots towards the tip (Kirby and Bowdler Sharpe, 1897).  Hindwings The hindwing underside is orange-yellow coloured, with a red coloured streak and black border (Kirby and Bowdler Sharpe, 1897).

Female  Wingspan (mm):64 (Kirby and Bowdler Sharpe, 1897).
The females generally have a different underside wing surface than the males, by being darker with broader margins on both wings (D'Abrera, 1982). The upper side wing surface lacks the submarginal series of spots in the black border (Yata and Morishita, 1979). The upper side wing surface is ochreous-yellow coloured, with very broad black coloured borders (Kirby and Bowdler Sharpe, 1897).

Subspecies and variation

Four subspecies are described, of which two subspecies are found in Java (Pequin, 2021; Yata and Morishita, 1979). Ssp. glauce is darkened, and has sometimes the forewing underside uniformly black and unmarked. Ssp. nakula is smaller and has on the forewing underside bright yellow coloured apical streaks and a paler colouration on the hindwing underside than the nominate species (Yata and Morishita, 1979).
